Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday said that a total of 363 foreign nationals are currently detained in the country's prisons, with the majority being Indian citizens.
The minister provided this information in response to a question from reserved seat MP Farida Yasmin during a question-and-answer session at the parliament.
According to the minister's information, citizens from 16 countries are detained in Bangladesh.
Of them, the highest number is from India, with 212 Indian citizens in Bangladeshi prisons. Among the Indians, 11 are convicts, 53 are detainees, and 148 are released.
Additionally, 114 Myanmar citizens are detained in Bangladeshi prisons, including 58 convicts, 50 detainees, and 6 released.
Other countries with detained citizens include 7 from Pakistan, 6 each from Nigeria and Malaysia, 4 each from China and Belarus, 2 each from Cameroon and Peru, and 1 each from America, Botswana, Georgia, Tanzania, Malawi, and Angola.
In response to a question from Chittagong-1 MP Mahbubur Rahman, the home minister said that the law enforcement agencies are working to bringing all the groups creating trouble in the Rohingya camps.
From August 25, 2017, to May 31, 2024, a total of 994 Rohingyas have been arrested in murder and arms cases.
The home minister said that there are no extrajudicial detainees in the country's prisons.
In response to a question from independent MP Nasser Shahriar Zahedi, the home minister said that, to provide relief to traffic police from high temperatures, the quality of the currently used uniforms is being tested, and more comfortable uniforms are being considered if necessary.
Asaduzzaman Khan also said that from 2009 to April 2024, the Department of Narcotics Control and other agencies have filed 1,113,470 cases and arrested 1,414,524 illegal drug traders.
In response to a question from independent MP Abdul Kader Azad, Asaduzzaman Khan said that in 2023, law enforcement agencies filed 97,241 cases and arrested 120,287 drug traders.
Up to April of this year, 29,336 cases have been filed, and 36,592 drug traders have been brought under the law.
