A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of the 17th amendment to the constitution; that extends, by 25 years, the tenure of 50 parliamentary seats reserved for women.
Supreme Court Lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the writ on Tuesday.
The petitioner also sought the issuance of a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain why the 17th amendment would not be declared contradictory to the constitution, reports UNB.
Cabinet secretaries, the law secretary, the parliamentary affairs secretary, and two others have been made respondents to the rule.
The petitioner said the 17th amendment to the constitution is illegal and contradictory to sections: 7,11,19,26,27,28,31,32, and 65 of the constitution.
The parliament, on July 8, 2018 unanimously passed the Constitution (17th Amendment) Bill, 2018 to extend, by 25 years, the tenure of the 50 parliamentary seats reserved for women.
