The Parliamentary Committee of Social Welfare Ministry has suggested keeping 1% quota for the disabled, in government jobs.
After the committee held a meeting on Wednesday, a press release from the parliament secretariat said: “It is recommended that the ministry should continue to take effective measures to ensure the 1% quota conservation system, to reflect the benefits provided in the Disabled Protection Law.”
The recommendations of the parliamentary committee came just a day after the government committee’s recommendation to the prime minister to abolish quota in the first and second class posts of government jobs and introduce merit-based recruitment rules.
The committee President Md Mozammel Haque presided over the meeting.
Currently 1% quota is reserved for the disabled in government jobs.
Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Memon said: “The disabled quota cannot be dismissed without amending the Disabled Protection Law, or else it will conflict with the law.”
56% government jobs are reserved under different quotas. In addition to the disabled quota, 30% are for the children of freedom fighters, 10% for women, 10% for district, and 5% quota for small ethnic groups are reserved.
The prime minster previously said there is a stay order from the High Court about the freedom fighters’ children quota and it cannot be dismissed.
The parliamentary committee also discussed an increase in the security of the Safe Home in Gazipur, as some teenagers escaped from there, recently.
The Parliamentary Committee also suggested the ministry to connect 11,000 Hijras to the mainstream of the country and to ensure proper education to their children.
Members of Parliamentary Committee Monoranjan Shil Gopal, Md. Habib-E-Millat, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, Abdul Matin, Lutfa Taher and Syeda Saira Mohsin, were also present in the meeting.
