Murder accused killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

A suspect in a murder case has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in the Horinarayanpur area of Sadar upazila, in Kushtia district. The deceased has been named as Anamul Mia, 30, son of Mostafa Mia from Liakhipur. He was also under investigation in a case filed over the abduction and murder of college student Sagar Saha. The Kushtia Detective Branch of Police Office-in-Charge (OC) Sabbirul Islam said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive-by in the area to arrest Sagar's kidnappers around 4am on Monday. "Sensing our presence, the kidnappers opened fire at us." In retaliation, police fired back, leaving Anamul injured while the others managed to flee the scene. Later, he was declared dead when taken to Kushtia General Hospital. Three policemen were also injured in the incident. The OC said they recovered a foreign-made pistol, two rounds of bullets and some local weapons from the spot. Sagar was abducted on August 16. Three days later, his body was recovered from an abandoned toilet of Harinarayanpur.
