Shantilota finds her new home, 'Shantilotar Shantinir'

Shantilota Ghose, 70, who had donated seven and a half bigha family property to build two schools in Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore, lost the last foundation she called home, in July. However, she found a new address after the upazila executive officer (UNO) and many more came to the rescue and built her a new home, “Shantilotar Shantinir”. Locals said the charitable Shantilota donated her remaining family property to two schools for the young children in the area, to Magura Primary School and Magura Secondary School. After receiving the donation, the school authorities never cared about her condition. Shantilota lived in a small mud house with her adopted son, his wife and their two children in Abhaynagar. Troubles ensued in July when snakes began infesting her house. Five snakes were found. Matters worsened when the house was damaged in the rain leaving her and her family distraught. Acting Abhaynagar UNO Mondip Gharai named Shantilota's new house "Shantinir" – abode of peace. Mondip told the Dhaka Tribune that the construction for the new house began with two-and-a-half bundles of tin and Tk7,000. Local UP Chairman Mofizuddin and the president of Puja Udjapan Parishad also extended helping hands. Six bundles of tin and Tk40,000 were needed to build the new house, which the UNO named “Shatilotar Shantinir”, hoping Shantilota would get to spend the rest of her life in peace.
