15 injured in clash between two BNP factions in Brahmanbaria

At least 15 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the BNP in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday afternoon.

The clash broke out in the Kadamtali area of the upazila on November 7, with several crude bombs exploded during the confrontation.
The identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately. They were receiving treatment locally.

According to police and local sources, a procession led by Kasba upazila BNP General Secretary Shariful Haque Swapan was brought out from in front of Araibari Darbar Sharif in the afternoon to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Leaders and activists of the upazila BNP and its affiliated organisations joined the procession.

The procession ended at Kadamtali intersection, where a brief discussion was being held.

At one point, another BNP faction, reportedly loyal to local MP Mushfiqur Rahman, arrived in the area. Tensions between the two groups escalated, triggering a chase and counter-chase that soon turned into a clash.

Both factions reportedly exploded several crude bombs during the confrontation, spreading panic across the area. At least 15 people from the two groups were injured.

Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Md Rashed said the two BNP factions had engaged in a clash, but police later brought the situation under control.

Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Samiul Islam said the two factions had organised separate programmes to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

Although both groups had initially assured the authorities that they would hold their programmes peacefully, they later became involved in a clash, he said.

The situation was brought under control through the efforts of law enforcement agencies and is now calm, the UNO added.
