Garment workers block Dhaka-Narayanganj Road over wage demand

Garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road on Monday, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.

The blockade began around 12:30 pm in the Shibu Market area, where thousands of agitated workers took to the streets, carrying sticks and chanting slogans.

The protest brought traffic to a halt, leaving commuters stranded in long tailbacks.

The workers demanded that their minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000 and called for an end to attacks on garment workers.

Workers from several factories in Fatullah, including Metro Knitting, Palmal Garments, Abir Fashion, Azad-Rifat Dyeing, Liberty and Midland, took part in the demonstration.

Md Shahin Ahmed, president of the district unit of the Garment Workers Trade Union, said that workers had blocked the road over their wage demand.

He said the protest, which initially began in the Shibu Market area, later spread across several kilometres of the surrounding areas.

Explaining the reasons behind the workers' anger, Shahin said the demonstrations in Narayanganj were triggered by resentment over police attacks on workers in different parts of the capital.

He added that garment workers in Narayanganj had remained largely peaceful over the past few days.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tarek Al Mehedi said police were sent to the spot after receiving reports of the blockade.

"Police are trying to bring the situation under control through talks with the workers," he said.
