Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday urged police officers to build a truly people-oriented police force through professionalism, neutrality and humane behaviour.
“Police must earn public trust by standing beside people, serving them and working for their welfare. They must win people's hearts through their service,” he said while addressing the basic training completion parade of the 27th Trainee Sergeants and 43rd Cadet Sub-Inspectors (2006 batch) at the parade ground of Bangladesh Police Academy at Sarda in Rajshahi.
He said people have high expectations of the police and called on officers to provide sincere services to people from all walks of life. Police must deliver legal services and protection without fear or favouritism, he said, stressing the need to establish themselves as a force that genuinely serves people.
Addressing the newly trained officers, Salahuddin said the members of the batch joined the profession of public service after nearly two decades of waiting, legal proceedings and various challenges.
Urging them to learn from past experiences, he instructed the officers not to practise discrimination or injustice in their professional or personal lives. He called on them to view their uniforms and assigned duties not merely as a job but as a solemn commitment to public safety, justice and the maintenance of law and order.
The minister also urged police to replace misconduct, bias and the use of muscle power with professionalism, competence and humane policing.
Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Bangladesh Police Academy Principal Md Mainul Hasan BPM, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner (in charge) Md Rezaul Alam Sarker and Rajshahi Range DIG Md Ashik Sayeed attended the programme as special guests.
The minister inspected the parade, received the salute and distributed awards among trainees who excelled in different categories.
Among the 27th trainee sergeants, Mohammad Omar Faruk received the Best Sergeant award, Mohammad Delwar Hossain was named Best in Academics, Saiful Islam received the Best in Field Activities award, and Md Asaduzzaman was recognised as Best Shooter.
From the 43rd Cadet Sub-Inspector (2006 batch), Mohammad Jahangir Alam was named Best Cadet, Md Borhanul Islam received the Best in Academics award, Dewan Golam Rasul was recognised as Best in Field Activities, and Md Kamal Gani received the Best Shooter award.
