Health minister: Highest-ever grant given for Durga Puja this year

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain on Saturday said the highest-ever financial grant has been provided for the celebration of Durga Puja this year since the country’s independence.

“Sarees were distributed among underprivileged people on the occasion of the Puja. Law enforcement agencies are maintaining the highest level of vigilance to ensure that the celebrations are held peacefully and joyfully,” he said while speaking at a views-exchange meeting with members of the Hindu community at Tamakanda village in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi, said a press release.

Sakhawat said BNP leaders and activists are also standing beside members of the Hindu community and extending cooperation in celebrating the largest festival of the country’s Hindu community.

He said BNP is a non-communal political party and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also believes in non-communal values. “Under his leadership, the government is working to take Bangladesh forward by ensuring peaceful coexistence of the people of all faiths,” the minister said.

He said the government has always stood beside the members of the Hindu community and will continue to do so in the future. He said a non-communal Bangladesh will be built by ensuring peaceful coexistence of the people irrespective of religion and caste, mutual respect and communal harmony.

After the meeting, the health minister handed over financial assistance from his personal fund to the presidents and general secretaries of 80 Puja mandaps in Monohardi and Belabo upazilas.
