Dengue and measles deaths cross 100 in Khulna division

The dengue and measles outbreaks in Khulna division have claimed 106 lives and affected 29,109 people since the beginning of the current year, according to the divisional health director’s office.

Of the deaths, 59 were caused by dengue and 47 were among suspected measles cases. The figures were revealed in a report signed by Khulna Divisional Health Director Dr Sheikh Md Mosharraf Hossain on Thursday.

According to the report, 292 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the division in the 24 hours to on Thursday morning, while two patients died.

So far this year, 15,621 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals in the division. Of them, 13,937 have recovered and been discharged, while 392 have been referred elsewhere for better treatment.

Khulna district recorded the highest number of dengue admissions at 5,998, with 23 deaths. Khulna Medical College Hospital admitted 3,057 patients and recorded 27 deaths, including 23 from Khulna.

Bagerhat reported 2,098 admissions and three deaths, Jessore 1,538 and two deaths, Chuadanga 133 and one death, and Jhenaidah 421 and two deaths.

The other districts recorded 571 admissions in Narail, 350 in Magura, 377 in Kushtia, 289 in Meherpur and 464 in Satkhira. Satkhira Medical College Hospital admitted another 325 patients.

Meanwhile, 13,487 suspected measles cases have been reported in the division since March 15. Of them, 443 have been confirmed and 47 suspected measles patients have died.

Khulna district reported 2,427 suspected cases, including 55 confirmed cases and 25 deaths. Kushtia recorded 3,068 suspected cases, 23 confirmed cases and 15 deaths.

Jhenaidah reported 1,121 suspected cases, 17 confirmed cases and five deaths, while Meherpur recorded 784 suspected cases, 10 confirmed cases and one death.

Jessore reported 938 suspected cases, including 58 confirmed cases; Narail 997 suspected and 85 confirmed cases; Bagerhat 989 suspected and 74 confirmed cases; and Satkhira 443 suspected and 34 confirmed cases.

Health authorities said they are continuing to monitor the situation and provide treatment to confirmed and suspected patients.
