A 23-year-old man was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Tongi, Gazipur, police said.
The victim, Joy, was the son of Sirajul Islam and lived in the Bank Math slum area of Tongi.
The incident occurred around 1am on Monday near Tongi Railway Station.
According to police, Joy was returning home when several youths attacked him with sharp weapons and fled the scene after killing him.
Local residents witnessed the incident and informed the Tongi Railway Police Outpost. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
No one has been detained in connection with the killing, and the motive has not yet been established, police said.
However, preliminary investigations suggest that the killing may have stemmed from a previous dispute.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.
Nur Alam Hossain, in-charge and a sub-inspector at the Tongi Railway Police Outpost, said a murder case would be filed with Kamalapur Railway Police Station in Dhaka over the incident.
