Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) continued protests on Saturday, demanding the reinstatement of former Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
They drew protest graffiti across the campus, staged a procession and showed a “red card” to newly appointed VC Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam.
Since on Saturday morning, students painted protest slogans and satirical graffiti on academic buildings and other prominent spots. “We will continue the movement until a gazette is issued reinstating Prof Sayem as vice-chancellor. We will not return to classes until our demand is met,” said CUET student Ridwanul Haque.
On September 21, the government removed Prof Sayem and appointed Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) as his replacement.
Prof Sayem had been appointed CUET VC on July 27, just 56 days before his removal. Students began protesting that night. They have been observing a “complete shutdown” at the university since September 22 as part of the ongoing protests.
