Titas Gas Field’s well No 28 has begun supplying 12.5 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) to the national grid as part of the government’s efforts to boost domestic gas production.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit formally inaugurated the gas supply from the well on Saturday afternoon.
Engineer Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Commerce, and Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Md Ziaul Haque attended the program as the special guests.
Speaking to journalists after the inauguration, the state minister said three more appraisal and development wells were being drilled at Titas. “If we are successful, we will be able to add another 45mmcfd of gas to the national grid,” he said.
The state minister further said the government had plans to drill 150 wells by 2030 and expand energy infrastructure to bridge the gap between the supply and the demand.
“If we can implement these plans, we hope to bring the gap between gas supply and demand to zero by 2030,” he said, adding that this would help resolve longstanding problems in the industrial, household, and power sectors.
BGFCL Managing Director Engineer Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik said drilling of Titas well No 29 had been completed. Logging and production testing are now underway, and the well is expected to supply around 15mmcfd within the next one-and-a-half to two months.
Drilling of well No 31 is also underway, with work reaching a depth of 4,920 metres against a planned depth of 5,600 metres. Gas has already been detected, and testing is expected to take another three to four months. The well is also expected to produce around 15mmcfd.
Project Director AKM Jasim Uddin Munna said well No 28 had been supplying 12.5mmcfd to the national grid on a trial basis for nearly two months.
The well was drilled by Chinese contractor CC/DC at a cost of around Tk200 crore, including VAT and income tax.
