Three people, including two women, were killed in separate road accidents in Jessore on Friday, with a bus crashing into a madrasa and orphanage building after hitting a woman in Keshabpur.
The accidents took place on the Jessore-Satkhira and Jessore-Khulna highways in Keshabpur and Abhaynagar upazilas on Friday morning and afternoon.
Rokeya Begum was killed after being hit by a Jessore-bound Star Deluxe Paribahan bus in front of Madhyokul Uttarpara Hafizia Madrasa and Orphanage in Keshabpur around 7am.
The bus, which was empty at the time, subsequently lost control and crashed into the front of the madrasa and orphanage building.
No students were injured, although 10-12 students were inside the madrasa at the time, according to its director.
The bus driver's assistant, Manik Fakir, was injured and admitted to Keshabpur Upazila Health Complex, while the driver fled the scene.
Keshabpur police station Officer-in-Charge Roksana Khatun said no complaint had been filed over the incident yet.
“The body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Jessore General Hospital for autopsy. The bus is in police custody,” she said.
Later, around 12:30pm, Amjed Gazi was killed and his relative Asiron Bibi was critically injured when a Garai Paribahan bus collided head-on with their motorcycle in the Urotola area of the Jessore-Khulna highway in Abhaynagar.
Amjed died at the scene, while Asiron died while being treated at Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex after being taken there in critical condition.
According to relatives, Amjed was taking Asiron to her daughter’s house in Basundia when the motorcycle collided with the bus near Majumdar Oil Mill.
Dr Naznin Nigar, a physician at Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex, said Amjed had died before being brought to the hospital, while Asiron died while undergoing treatment.
Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam of Nowapara Highway Police Station said police seized the bus involved in the crash.
However, its driver and helper fled the scene, and efforts were underway to arrest them.
