Police have recovered the bodies of four members of a family, including a retired schoolteacher and his wife, from their home in Kamalkashana Masua Para Mohalla in Rangpur city.
The bodies of retired Rangpur District School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, daughter Kandi Chakraborty, 24, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, were recovered from the locked house at around 11:45pm on Saturday.
Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali police station OC Nazmul Alam confirmed the recovery of the four bodies.
According to police and local residents, the door to Ganapati’s house had remained locked for the past two days. Relatives became suspicious after repeated phone calls to the family went unanswered.
At around 10:45pm on Saturday, locals informed the fire service, which broke open the door and entered the house. Two bodies were found inside, while two others were recovered near the roof, according to police.
After receiving the information, Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty, Kotwali police station OC Nazmul Islam and other police officials, along with a RAB team, cordoned off the house.
Relatives alleged that the four family members had been murdered and demanded that those responsible be arrested and brought to justice.
They also suspected that the family may have been killed after confronting robbers. Household items were found scattered, and jewellery boxes inside a cupboard appeared to have been disturbed, prompting relatives to suspect that cash and gold ornaments may have been looted.
Malti Chakraborty, a cousin of Ganapati, alleged that the deaths were the result of a planned murder and demanded a proper investigation.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty said the matter was being investigated.
"We have recovered the bodies of four people. They will be sent to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies. Necessary legal action is being taken after identifying those involved," he said.
Police are investigating the possible cause and motive behind the deaths, he added.
