State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit on Friday announced plans to relaunch Jessore Children’s Hospital on a larger scale after the completion of ongoing healthcare development projects in the district.
“My father started this hospital with the support of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. But the hospital has remained in a dilapidated condition for a long time,” he said.
Construction of a 500-bed hospital at Jessore Medical College has already begun, while work is also underway to turn the Jessore Coronary Care Unit into a full-fledged facility, he said. “Once the coronary care unit becomes fully operational, we will take the initiative to relaunch Jessore Children’s Hospital on a larger scale.”
Amit made the remarks as the chief guest at an annual art exhibition at SM Sultan Fine Art College in Jessore, marking the 103rd birth anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan.
Speaking at the event, Amit also criticised those he alleged had supported former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her tenure but were now speaking out against her. He urged people to remain vigilant as the country moves toward establishing democracy at all levels under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“They speak of democracy, but nurture fascism in their hearts. If given an opportunity, they will strike again,” he said.
Amit also announced that the government would consider providing land to S.M. Sultan Fine Art College at a nominal price if such an opportunity arose.
The program was chaired by S.M. Sultan Fine Art College Principal Shamim Iqbal. The three-day exhibition features 50 artworks by teachers and students of the college.
