Police sent an alleged member of banned militant outfit JMB to court on Thursday, seeking a 10-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The accused, identified as Mohammad Arif, 26, was arrested by members of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit from Hemayetpur in Savar on Tuesday. He was produced before the court from Savar Model Police Station around noon on Thursday.
According to police, several bombs were recovered from a bag in Arif’s possession at the time of his arrest. Later, based on information provided by him, police raided his rented residence in South Shyampur, Hemayetpur.
During the raid, police recovered several powerful bombs, cocktails and a large quantity of materials allegedly used to make explosives.
Police subsequently filed a case at Savar Model Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming six people, including Arif, and several unidentified others as accused.
According to the case statement, the accused are members of the banned New JMB and had gathered in the Savar area with explosives to carry out acts of sabotage.
The statement also alleged that they supported the ideology of the banned organisation and were involved in activities aimed at creating public panic, threatening public safety and national sovereignty, and attempting to attack law enforcement personnel.
The other named accused are currently absconding, police said.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Alam said Arif was sent to court with a 10-day remand plea.
