Security has been tightened around Babunagar Madrasa in Nazirhat, Fatikchhari, ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Chittagong.
The district administration said members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), police, Special Security Force (SSF) and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed in and around the madrasa to ensure the visit goes smoothly. Intelligence agencies are also maintaining round-the-clock surveillance.
The prime minister is scheduled to arrive in Fatikchhari by helicopter at around 1:30pm on Sunday as part of her Chittagong visit and visit Babunagar in Nazirhat. She is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Ameer Muhibullah Babunagari.
At the madrasa, access has been restricted ahead of the visit. Only authorised individuals and those with designated passes are being allowed to enter after undergoing multiple rounds of security checks.
Dog squads have been conducting security sweeps across the madrasa premises since 10am.
Law enforcement personnel have been deployed at key points, including the entrance to the madrasa, while security has also been stepped up along the prime minister’s route and in surrounding areas.
Sources said the local administration and law enforcement agencies are coordinating with specialised security forces responsible for the prime minister’s protection. Intelligence personnel are also monitoring the overall situation in and around the madrasa.
A brief meeting with senior scholars of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh is scheduled during the visit. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will attend the meeting as chief guest, which will be chaired by Muhibullah Babunagari. Around 70 senior scholars of the organisation are expected to participate.
The district administration said security has been given the highest priority alongside arrangements for the prime minister’s visit. Officials are also following the approved schedule and instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
