An armed gang of robbers looted 17 bhoris of gold jewelry worth an estimated Tk 38 lakh, Tk 100,000 in cash, a smartphone, and other valuables from a house in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur early on Friday.
The robbery occurred around 2:00 am in Panchultia (Molla Bari) village under Goshinga Union. According to the victims, four masked robbers forced their way into the house after breaking down the main door with a heavy wooden beam.
Armed with machetes and knives, they held homeowner Abdus Samad Molla and his wife, Suraiya Begum, at knifepoint while searching the house.
Suraiya Begum said the robbers threatened to abduct the couple’s grandchildren if they failed to hand over their valuables, forcing the family to comply.
Abdus Samad Molla said his three daughters had been staying at the house for two days to attend a nearby wedding. As their husbands, along with one of his sons, work in Saudi Arabia, the daughters had stored their jewelry and savings at the family home.
The stolen items included seven bhoris of gold belonging to one daughter, another seven bhoris owned by a second daughter, and three bhoris belonging to the youngest daughter, in addition to cash and a smartphone.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam said that they inspected the house, spoke with family members, and were collecting evidence. He said legal proceedings were underway and efforts had begun to identify and arrest those involved.
