At least 9 people were killed and around 25 others injured in a head-on collision between 2 buses in the Dayamir area of Osmaninagar upazila in Sylhet on Friday morning.
Officer-in-Charge of Osmaninagar Police Station Golam Mostafa confirmed the incident.
He said 7 people died at the scene, while 3-year-old Faiza and another injured passenger, identified as Titon, 22, died at the hospital.
The deceased identified so far include Haji Moinul Islam, 55, son of Haji Shafik Uddin of Lakshmipur village in Dhuliarpar, Kishoreganj, and Pritam Das, 22, a resident of Sobhanighat in Sylhet city.
Highway Police Sylhet Region SP Rezaul Karim said reckless speeding and the tendency to overtake caused the crash in Osmaninagar that claimed the lives of 9 people, including a 3-year-old child.
As of 2:30pm, when this report was filed, authorities were still preparing a complete list of the dead and injured.
According to police, a Bengal Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka to Sylhet collided head-on with a Unique Paribahan bus traveling from Sylhet to Dhaka.
The impact sent the Unique Paribahan bus into a roadside ditch, while the Bengal Paribahan bus remained on the highway.
Police said around 20 to 25 injured passengers were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment.
