More than 500 tourists stranded in Sajek under Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati are returning home after 4 days as road communication was restored. The Baghaihat Army Zone began bringing back the tourists on Friday morning.
As the roads dried up, the tourists were escorted from Sajek to Baghaihat by the Army and police. Hill runoff from upstream had submerged the Sajek road at 3 points, cutting off road communication and leaving more than 500 tourists stranded.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amena Marjan said that of the 561 tourists stranded in Sajek, more than 100 were brought back on Thursday under Army escort.
She said: “As the situation has returned to normal, the remaining tourists are returning safely to their respective home areas on Friday.”
Continuous rainfall had left around 550 tourists stranded at the Sajek tourist destination after floodwater disrupted traffic on the Khagrachhari–Sajek road at several points.
Rahul Chakma John, organizing secretary of the Cottage and Resort Owners Association of Sajek, said the stranded tourists were provided accommodation free of charge and were charged only for water.
