Two people were killed in a landslide in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar, early Thursday as continuous heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a hillside.
The incident occurred at around 2am in the Machniakata area of Baraitali union.
According to locals, a section of a hill collapsed onto a house while three people were sleeping inside. Residents rushed to the scene and rescued the victims from the debris.
Two of them—14-year-old Tausif and 17-year-old Rumi Akhter, who were cousins—died at the scene. An injured woman was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.
Chakaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shahin Delwar confirmed the deaths, saying local residents carried out the rescue operation before police reached the scene.
Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a series of landslides across Cox's Bazar in recent days.
On Wednesday, five students were killed in a landslide at a madrasa in a Rohingya camp in Ukhia. One person died in a landslide in the Daryanagar Barachhara area on Tuesday, while nine others were killed in separate landslides in Ukhia and Cox's Bazar municipality on Monday.
With Thursday's incident, the death toll from rain-triggered landslides in Cox's Bazar has risen to 17.
