A young man, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain ,27, died after being beaten by locals following allegations of mobile phone theft during Fajr prayers in Srinagar Upazila of Munshiganj on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 7 am in Mattagram area under Shyamsiddhi Union, near the Osman Gani Bari Mosque. According to police and local sources, a mobile phone was stolen from a man during the Fajr prayer. Locals later suspected Shahadat’s involvement and detained him.
Witnesses said he was beaten severely on the spot and suffered critical injuries. He died shortly afterward. His body was later found lying in front of the mosque before police arrived.
Police from Srinagar Police Station recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital for autopsy.
The deceased, Shahadat Hossain, was the son of Shamsul Haque of the same area. Police said he had previous allegations and multiple theft-related cases filed against him.
Local resident Mintu Talukder said Shahadat was caught after being accused of stealing a mobile phone, following which he was beaten by locals.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jewel Mia said police responded immediately after receiving the information and recovered the body. An investigation is underway, and further details will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
