Police couple arrested over torture of house help in Khulna

A police couple has been arrested after a case was filed over the alleged physical abuse of a house help in Khulna.

The case was filed on Thursday by the victim's mother, who travelled from Narsingdi following the incident.

The accused are Sonadanga Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sanjoy Mitra and his wife, ASI Poppy Mitra.

According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when Poppy allegedly assaulted the house help after a dish was burned while cooking. She also allegedly inflicted burn injuries on the victim using a hot pan.

Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rafiqul Islam said the victim, a resident of Nishchintapur area in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi, had been working at ASI Sanjoy Mitra's residence for the past five years.

After the incident came to light on Wednesday, police rescued the victim and took her to the Victim Support Centre. The two police officers were subsequently taken into custody, while the victim's family was informed later that night.

The family arrived in Khulna on Thursday morning, after which the victim's mother, Minati Rani, filed the case with Sonadanga Police Station.

OC Rafiqul Islam said both accused would be produced before a court by Thursday afternoon.

Mominul Islam, a lawyer and coordinator of the Human Rights Implementation Organisation in Khulna, said it was unacceptable for members of law enforcement agencies to be involved in such acts.

He added that the organisation would provide all necessary assistance to the victim's family.
