A trader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants after being dragged from his home in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Sohel Munshi, 39, a scrap metal trader and son of the late Ismail Munshi of Kalurgaon village in Gaodia union.
The incident occurred between 1:30am and 2am.
According to family members and police, Sohel had gone to sleep in a separate room after dinner. His wife, Nupur Begum, who recently gave birth, was staying in an adjacent room with his mother, Sefali Begum.
At around 2am, family members woke up after hearing a loud noise and noticing flames in the courtyard. When they came outside, they found Sohel's motorcycle on fire and his body lying nearby with multiple injuries.
Police suspect that the assailants entered the house during the night, brought Sohel outside and hacked him with sharp weapons before setting fire to the motorcycle and fleeing the scene.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Md Anisur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (Srinagar-Sirajdikhan Circle), said Sohel was taken out of the house and killed with sharp weapons.
"The motive behind the murder has not yet been determined," he said.
He added that legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
