The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has launched maintenance dredging operations in the Matarbari Deep Sea Port channel to restore navigability and ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of vessels.
The initiative follows significant sediment buildup in recent months, which reduced channel depth at several locations and threatened to affect maritime operations.
Authorities said maintaining the designated depth is crucial for the safe passage of commercial and energy-carrying ships. The dredging work is being carried out by the Chinese-owned trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) King Copper.
The vessel is removing accumulated silt from various sections of the channel to re-establish and maintain the required navigational depth, supporting efficient and secure port operations.
