A discussion meeting and a colorful rally were held in Rajshahi marking World No Tobacco Day 2026 with a call to raise awareness against tobacco and nicotine addiction.
The programme was organised on Wednesday by the district administration with the cooperation of the National Tobacco Control Cell under the Health Services Division and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
This year's theme of the day was: ‘Unmask the Allure, Prevent Tobacco and Nicotine Addiction.’
The discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's office with Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Additional District Magistrate Umme Kulsum Sampa conducted the programme, while Civil Surgeon Dr S.I.M. Raziul Karim attended as the special guest.
Speaking at the meeting, Kazi Shahidul Islam said tobacco and nicotine addiction remain major public health concerns, posing a serious threat to society, particularly to the younger generation.
"Various tactics are being used to attract youths to tobacco products. We must expose such temptations and strengthen public awareness. Building a healthy and talented generation requires collective efforts to establish a tobacco-free society," he said.
Addressing the function as the special guest, Dr S.I.M. Raziul Karim said tobacco consumption significantly increases the risk of deadly diseases, including cancer, heart disease and respiratory complications.
Following the discussion, a colorful rally was brought out from the venue and paraded through different streets of the city, highlighting the significance of the day.
Officials of various government departments, health workers, students and representatives of civil society took part in the programme.
