15 killed as rod-laden truck overturns in Tangail

At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after a rod-laden truck overturned in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila early Monday.

The accident occurred in the Jogarchar area on the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway.

The identified dead are Md Sagar Miah, 20, son of Sakim Mia of Manda upazila in Naogaon; Robiul Islam, 25, son of Shahidul Islam of the same area; Ismail Hossain, 19, son of Altaf Hossain of Tanore upazila in Rajshahi; Nazrul, 60, of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj; Mamun, 45, of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila; Sarikul, 25, son of Saidul of Niamatpur upazila in Naogaon; Md Bari, 21, son of Abdur Rashid of Manda upazila in Naogaon; Badsha, 32, son of Abdur Rahim; Gias, 20, son of Rashid of Pakuria village in Naogaon; Mainul, 28, son of Rashid of the same area; Yakub, son of Akbar Ali of Rajendrabati area; and Tarek, 20, son of Sultan of the same area.

The identities of the remaining 3 dead could not be confirmed.

According to police, the truck, which was heading towards northern Bangladesh, lost control after reaching the Kalihati area and overturned on the highway.

The heavy rods being transported, along with parts of the vehicle, crushed passengers travelling in the truck, leaving 15 people dead on the spot and several others injured.

Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar told Dhaka Tribune that the truck had picked up passengers from different locations while transporting rods.

“The bodies are being recovered and sent to the hospital,” he said.
