12 injured in gas blast at Narayanganj power plant

At least 12 people suffered burn injuries in an explosion at the canteen of the Jera Meghnaghat Power Plant in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Wednesday afternoon.

The injured were rescued and admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The victims were identified as Nazmul Sheikh, 40, Saiful Islam, 30, Ramizul, 45, Amir, 25, Shankar, 25, Kawsar, 30, Tuhin Sheikh, 30, Monir Hossain, 45, Al Amin, 40, Osman Gani, 30, Suprabhat Ghosh, 42, and Badrul Haidar, 50.

Coworkers said officials and employees of the power plant were having lunch at the canteen when an explosion occurred inside the facility, leaving at least 12 people with burns on their hands, faces, and legs.

The explosion is primarily suspected to have been caused by a gas leak in the canteen.

Resident Surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman of the burn institute said the extent of the injuries was being assessed and details would be disclosed later.

Meanwhile, Narayanganj Fire Service Assistant Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin said a firefighting team was heading to the scene and further details would be available after inspection.
