Ferry services on Hatia route suspended for two days due to rough weather

Ferry services on the Chairman Ghat–Nolchira route in Hatia, an island upazila of Noakhali, have remained suspended for two consecutive days due to adverse weather conditions. The disruption has left goods-laden vehicles stranded at the ghat, causing severe hardship for drivers and traders.

Hatia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Russell Iqbal confirmed the matter on Friday evening.

A visit to the ghat area showed long queues of covered vans, trucks and pickup vehicles waiting for crossing. Prolonged delays have raised concerns over spoilage of perishable items such as fish and vegetables, putting traders at risk of financial losses. With no alternative means of river crossing available, many vehicles remain stuck at the terminal. The lack of adequate food and accommodation facilities at the ghat has further worsened the situation for drivers.

Local resident Zillur Rahman said that despite the suspension of ferry services, small boats were seen operating along the same route.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Russell Iqbal said ferry operations were halted from Thursday as a precautionary measure after local cautionary signal number three was issued at the seaports. Services will resume once weather conditions improve, he added.
