Police have recovered the bodies of three men from a remote hilly area of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar, raising concerns over possible links to abduction and human trafficking networks.
The bodies were discovered on Tuesday morning in the rugged hills of North Shilkhali. The deceased were identified as Rabi Alam, son of Ruhul Amin; Mujibur Ullah, son of Nurul Kabir; and Nurul Boshor, son of Nurul Islam. All three were residents of Shilkhali village under Baharchhara union.
According to police, one victim was found dead at the scene, while the other two were rescued in critical condition and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. They later died on the way.
Law enforcement officials suspect the killings may be linked to disputes over kidnapping and human trafficking. Authorities and local sources said the victims were allegedly associated with a gang involved in robbery and trafficking activities.
Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam of Teknaf Model Police Station said the bodies showed clear signs of violence, including stab wounds and head injuries. He added that the incident is believed to be linked to conflicts over abduction and trafficking, and that a thorough investigation is underway.
Baharchhara Union Parishad Chairman Amjad Hossain Khokon confirmed that the victims had multiple injuries caused by sharp weapons and blunt force, suggesting a violent confrontation between rival groups.
However, family members expressed uncertainty over the motive. Ruhul Amin, father of one of the victims, said his son was called out at night and was found dead in the hills the following morning.
Local residents reported a rise in hostage-taking incidents in the hill areas. A woodcutter, speaking anonymously, said cries for help are sometimes heard from the hills, pointing to ongoing criminal activity.
Residents also said that armed abduction and trafficking networks have long been active in the Baharchhara hills, leaving around 5,000 people living in fear.
The incident has sparked widespread concern in the area as authorities continue their investigation.
