Teacher dies of heart attack while waiting for fuel in Rangpur

A schoolteacher died of a heart attack while waiting in a queue to purchase fuel from a filling station in Rangpur city on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Mehedi Hasan from New Engineer Para area in the city. He was a teacher at Balakuar Chowrar Hat Government Primary School.

Family members said Mehedi Hasan went to a filling station at Parjatan crossing to buy fuel. While standing in line, he fell sick and was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, they said.

Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station Azad Rahman said police received information that a man died after falling sick while waiting in a queue at the fuel station.

“He might have suffered a heart attack while standing in the queue,” he added.

However, a fuel crisis caused chaos at filling stations across Rangpur city on Sunday, with hundreds of motorcyclists and vehicles waiting in long queues.

At Shapla Chattar area around 11:30 am, a dispute over queue-jumping at a filling station turned violent, leaving three people injured, one of them unconscious and hospitalized.

Customers alleged that no proper queue system is being maintained. Many also claim fuel is being under-dispensed amid the shortage.

With no clear supply schedule across the city’s filling stations, residents continue to face severe fuel crisis and are calling for better regulation, including a fuel card system.
