Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that Sylhet will be developed into a modern tourism city, with visible changes expected within the next two to three years.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting held at the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) conference room on Saturday.
The minister said initiatives are being implemented under a structured plan to transform Sylhet into a “vibrant city,” featuring a lively urban environment, cultural diversity, and strong economic activity. He added that meaningful progress would be possible if the city’s around one million residents are actively engaged in the development process, alongside ensuring sustainability in all projects.
He also emphasized the urgent need to address waterlogging, warning that without timely and effective measures, low-lying areas of the city could become uninhabitable in the future.
The meeting was conducted by SCC Secretary Md Ashiq Noor, while Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Reza Rafin Sarkar delivered the welcome address. Special guest remarks were presented by Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman.
A PowerPoint presentation on waterlogging mitigation was delivered by Engineer Tonmoy Chaki. Architect Shakur Majid presented the design of the proposed Lal Dighi Par Super Market, while Architect Intekhab Hossain showcased the interior design of the City Corporation building. Ongoing development projects were outlined by Assistant Engineer Anshuman Bhattacharjee.
Special guests also included the Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Professor Dr AM Sarwar Uddin Chowdhury, and Sylhet Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury.
