The officials and employees of the National University (NU) on Sunday staged a sit-in in Gazipur to press home their four-point demand.
The demonstration took place in front of the university’s academic building at Board Bazar in Gazipur, where nearly 988 staff members from various departments joined the programme.
Participants said that they were deprived of several benefits during the tenure of the previous government, and some officials and employees were even dismissed from their jobs. Following the fall of the government, they were later reinstated through a High Court verdict. However, they alleged that despite the court ruling, the university administration has yet to implement the related benefits.
According to the protesters, they have been waiting for nearly nine months for a resolution, but no effective steps have been taken so far, prompting them to launch the protest.
Miajuddin, a section officer at the university’s College Inspection Branch, said their demands include promotions based on seniority in line with the court verdict, adjustment of the salary structure, cancellation of notices that contradict the court’s ruling, and withdrawal of punitive transfers imposed on several officials and employees.
The protesters urged the authorities to fulfil their demands before the upcoming Eid, warning that they would announce tougher programmes if the issues remain unresolved.
Mia Hossain Rana, general secretary of the Job Protection Committee, said discussions had already been held with the university’s vice-chancellor regarding the four-point demand. He added that the vice-chancellor assured them the matters would be considered and resolved.
