Bumper mustard yield brings cheer to farmers in Dupchanchia

Farmers are happy with a bumper mustard harvest in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra this season, as favorable weather conditions and timely government support have led to impressive yields across the upazila.

According to the Dupchanchia Upazila Agriculture Office, a target had been set to cultivate mustard on 3,650 hectares of land during the current season. However, cultivation was completed on 3,460 hectares — 190 hectares short of the target, mainly due to delays in harvesting Aman paddy.

Officials said the season began with favorable weather conditions, and farmers received necessary chemical fertilizers and pesticides on time, allowing them to avoid major cultivation problems. Harvesting and threshing of mustard have already begun in several areas.

Farmers of Gobindapur, Morgram and Sherpur reported excellent yields this year. They credited proper care and guidance from the Agriculture Office for the success.

On average, farmers are harvesting five to five-and-a-half maunds of mustard per bigha. In the current market, dry mustard is selling at Tk 2,800 per maund, while freshly harvested mustard is priced at Tk 2,300 per maund.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Muhammad Saiful Abedin said farmers were encouraged to use high-quality seeds, improve soil fertility, and adopt modern technologies. Regular field-level monitoring and advice were also provided to protect crops from pests and diseases.

As a result, mustard production has been excellent this season,” he said, adding that harvesting is in full swing in areas where the crop has matured. With good yields and favorable market prices, farmers are hopeful of earning satisfactory profits this year.
