Locals stage demo protesting woman’s death in road crash

Local residents staged demonstrations after blocking the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Bogra on Friday, protesting the death of a woman in a road accident.

The blockade at Betgari Lichutala Bypass intersection in Shajahanpur Upazila caused severe traffic congestion on both sides of the highway, leaving commuters stranded and triggering widespread disruption.

Local sources said that the accident occurred on February 18 when a bus struck an e-bike from behind on the highway in the Betgari area. Four people, including the driver, were seriously injured.

Chameli Khatun, 35, wife of Juwel, died at around 2:00 am on February 19 while undergoing treatment, locals said. Her two-year-old son Soyad was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors amputated his right leg. Another child, Neha, and e-bike driver Selim remain under treatment.

Chameli’s death sparked anger among residents, who staged the protest at around 9:45 am. Later, the demonstrators withdrew the blockade at around 10:45 am after local lawmaker gave them assurance.
