Mesut Ozil’s convoy involved road accident in Cox’s Bazar

A vehicle in the convoy carrying German World Cup-winning footballer Mesut Ozil and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son Necmettin Bilal Erdogan was involved in a road accident while returning from a visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred at around 6:45pm on the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf highway in the Kutupalong area of Ukhiya.

According to police, a battery-powered auto-rickshaw collided with one of the vehicles in the convoy. The auto-rickshaw was severely damaged, and its driver sustained injuries.

Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam of Shahpori Highway Police Station confirmed the matter.

He said that while the convoy was returning from the Rohingya camp, an auto-rickshaw suddenly entered the VIP convoy, breaching protocol. One of the escort vehicles then collided with it. The auto-rickshaw has been seized.

The injured driver was provided with primary treatment locally, the OC added, noting that an investigation is underway and necessary action will be taken.

Earlier in the day, Ozil and members of the Turkish delegation visited various activities at the Rohingya camp. In the afternoon, he played football with Rohingya youths at Camp 4 and later joined an iftar gathering in the evening.
