A man has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for setting fire to the election camp of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate in Naogaon-5 (Sadar) constituency.
The Election Investigation and Judicial Committee of the constituency handed down the sentence on Friday afternoon. The committee is chaired by Asaduzzaman Noor.
The convict, Liton Kumar Chauhan, is a resident of Nuniapara Sweeper Colony in Naogaon town.
According to locals, he was caught red-handed while setting fire to the Jamaat election camp of candidate Abu Sadat Md Sayem at Muktir More around 4am and was later handed over to police. His political affiliation could not be confirmed.
The Election Investigation and Judicial Committee said a local Jamaat leader filed a written complaint with the committee chairman following the incident. After reviewing the complaint and evidence, the committee found the allegation to be true.
Liton was convicted in a summary trial under Rule 27 of the Political Parties and Candidates’ Conduct Rules 2025 and sentenced to 10 days’ imprisonment before being sent to jail.
