Ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Elections, 3,000 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in 74 platoons have been deployed in four districts of greater Rangpur to control the law and order situation and maintain peace.
Rangpur Sector Commander Colonel SM Shafiqur Rahman disclosed this information to local journalists after inspecting the BGB check post in the Park Intersection area of the metropolis on Saturday. BGB officials were present at the time.
He told reporters that 74 BGB platoons have been deployed in 26 base camps in Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts of greater Rangpur under the BGB Rangpur sector, reports BSS.
"BGB members are working as a mobile and striking force, including flawless security and establishment of check posts in the electoral area. BGB has paid special attention to maintaining peace and order in the risky centers of these districts," he said.
SM Shafiqur Rahman said that BGB has mainly started performing its duties as a mobile and striking force.
Search operations are underway to provide security in the election area. In addition, dog squads have been deployed at various places considering the risk. Patrols and intelligence surveillance have also been increased.
He further said that security has been strengthened along the 4,427-kilometer border across the country. BGB's Rapid Action and Quick Response Force are ready to deal with any emerging situation.
Colonel Shafiqur Rahman said that BGB has increased the dynamics of its activities through digital sensors such as drones, body cameras, and CCTV cameras.
"BGB is the vigilant guard of the border. We want to work as a symbol of people's trust. Therefore, BGB will work with utmost professionalism to conduct the Jatiya Sangsad Elections in a free, fair, and festive atmosphere," he said.
He further said that there are 2,572 polling stations in four districts of greater Rangpur. Out of these, 600 are risky centers.
"We have intelligence surveillance in these centers. Besides, representatives of the BGB coordination team are working at the district and upazila levels. We will be able to reach there as soon as any incident occurs," he added.
