Woman, two children killed after jumping in front of train in Gazipur

A woman and her two young children were killed after she jumped in front of a moving train in Gazipur on Monday morning, police said, in what appears to be a case of suicide.

The incident occurred around 11am at a railway crossing in the Nayanepara area of Ward No. 41, according to Officer-in-Charge Atikul Islam of Pubail Police Station.

The deceased woman was identified as Hafeza Khatun Mala (25) of Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur. Her children were Tabassum (8) and Maruf (5).

Police said the identity of Mala’s husband could not be confirmed immediately, though her in-laws’ home is located in the Aturi area under Joydebpur Police Station.

Local residents reported that the incident took place on a stretch of railway track east of the Pubail crossing. Police later recovered the bodies from the scene.

Citing family members, Pubail Railway Station Master Md Musa said Mala had been living with her children at her in-laws’ house in Aturi and that a domestic dispute had reportedly occurred earlier in the day.

“She left home in the morning after dressing her daughter in her school uniform,” Musa said. “Later, she went onto the railway tracks with her children as a Brahmanbaria-bound Titas commuter train was passing. All three died on the spot.”
