RAB has arrested Russell Sheikh, 30, the prime suspect in the murder of his pregnant wife, Iti Khatun, in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj. Acting on a tipoff, Russell, a resident of Latifpur village in Gobindapur Union, was detained during a special operation in Charbakar Bazar under Debidwar Police Station in Comilla Thursday night.
According to RAB-6 press release on Friday, Russell and his family members allegedly killed Iti over family disputes. They then put her body in a sack, weighed it down with bricks, and hid it among water hyacinths in their own pond. Iti had been missing since November 23 and was four months pregnant.
On November 30, locals spotted a sack floating in the pond and alerted police, who recovered the body that night. The next day, on December 1, Iti’s brother Selim filed a murder case with Muksudpur Police Station, naming Russell as the main accused.
