Locals foil fertilizer smuggling in Gazipur

Locals in Sreepur, Gazipur, have foiled an alleged fertilizer-smuggling attempt, seizing a truck and handing it over to police along with 80 sacks of urea. Each sack, bearing the logo of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), contained 50 kg of urea.

Around 11:30pm on Friday, residents of Nij Maona village in Gazipur Union stopped a speeding truck (Dhaka Metro-N 19-1826) on suspicion. After removing a blue plastic cover, they discovered BADC-marked fertilizer sacks and called the national emergency service 999. Police from Maona camp later took the truck and fertilizer into custody.

The fertilizer was reportedly loaded from “Mayer Doa Enterprise”, owned by Afir Uddin, and was being transported towards Taktar Chala in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail. The truck driver fled the scene.

Sreepur Upazila Agriculture Officer Sumaiya Sultana Bonna said a case is being processed and, if no owner is identified, the seized fertilizer will be auctioned and the proceeds deposited in the government exchequer.
