BRUR students protest cancellation of winter vacation

General students of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur staged a human chain and held a rally in front of the administrative building on Sunday afternoon, protesting the cancellation of the winter vacation and demanding the reinstatement of winter holidays.

The students have also threatened to launch a tougher movement if the university authorities do not withdraw their decision.

They said that, as per the academic calendar, the winter vacation was supposed to begin at the start of December. But the university administration cancelled the winter vacation in the name of holding the Brucsu election and the convocation ceremony, and announced that the university would go on vacation in January.

Students said that if the university goes on winter vacation in December, they would be able to spend time with their parents and families and visit home. Schools and other educational institutions also remain closed during that period. Ignoring students’ demand, the administration set December to hold the Brucsu election and the convocation.

They said they do not want the Brucsu election or the convocation in December. They want the winter vacation according to the academic calendar.

The authority may hold the Brucsu election and convocation after the winter vacation, they added. After the demonstration, the students submitted a memorandum containing their demands to the vice-chancellor.
