Cyclist crushed as car falls off Chittagong expressway

A private car plunged off the elevated expressway in Chittagong's port area and fell onto a cyclist below, killing him.

The victim has been identified as Shafiq, 55.

Four passengers inside the car were also injured.

The accident occurred around 4pm on Thursday, when a Toyota Harrier veered off the Shaheed Wasim Akram Expressway and fell.

Confirming the incident, Mahmudul Hasan, assistant commissioner of CMP’s Bandar police station, said the vehicle was coming from the Patenga side. Near Nimtala intersection, opposite Bandar police station, the car skidded off the expressway and crashed onto the road below, injuring four passengers and the cyclist.

He said the five critically injured people — including a young woman — were taken to Islami Bank Hospital, while the wounded cyclist, Shafiq, was taken to the Mother And Child Care Hospital, where he later died.
