A teenage boy, son of a judge, was hacked to death inside their home in Rajshahi, while his mother was seriously injured in the same attack on Thursday.
Police have detained the suspected assailant, who is now under treatment at a hospital.
The incident occurred at the family’s flat in the Terkhadia Dabtala area of Rajshahi city.
The victim, Tawsif Rahman Suman, 16, was the son of Abdur Rahman, a judge of the Rajshahi Metropolitan and Sessions Judge’s Court. He was a ninth-grade student.
Judge Abdur Rahman’s wife, Tasmin Nahar, sustained critical injuries and was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, police said. Law enforcement personnel immediately cordoned off the building after the attack.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abu Sufian said the assailant entered the judge’s residence at Dabtala and attacked his wife and son with a sharp weapon. Tawsif died on the way to the hospital, while his mother remains under treatment. The motive behind the attack is still unclear.
The attacker, who was also injured during the incident, is receiving treatment and will be interrogated once his condition improves, the commissioner added.
Further investigation revealed that the judge and his family lived in a rented apartment on the fifth floor of a ten-storey building named Spark View. The assailant reportedly entered the building after identifying himself as the judge’s brother and signing the visitor’s log under the name Limon.
Building security guard Meser Ali said he had never seen the man before but allowed him in after he introduced himself as the judge’s brother and provided his name and phone number.
About half an hour later, the housemaid ran downstairs, saying the judge’s wife and son had been attacked. Residents rushed to the flat and found three people injured. All were taken to the hospital.
Police Commissioner Sufian, who visited the scene around 5pm, said a driving licence was found in the attacker’s pocket, suggesting he might be a driver.
He also noted that Judge Rahman’s wife had previously filed a general diary (GD) against the man at Jalalabad police station in Sylhet.
