A 22-year-old man was killed in a gunfight between two rival factions of the BNP in Mollakandi union of Munshiganj on Sunday night.
The deceased was identified as Tuhin Dewan, son of Selim Dewan from Dakshin Beherkandi village under Mollakandi union.
According to locals, the clash erupted over control of the Munshiganj Primary School grounds, a long-standing point of contention between two local BNP groups.
Witnesses said supporters of Mollakandi union BNP leader Ozir Ali and followers of Awlad Group’s Liton Bepari engaged in a violent confrontation.
During the altercation, Tuhin, reportedly a follower of union BNP President Wahid Mollah and local leader Atiq Mallick, was targeted with a cocktail explosion and later shot.
He sustained multiple bullet wounds to the back and neck.
Relatives rushed him to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, tension gripped the area as supporters of the rival factions gathered in large numbers. Police have since deployed additional forces to prevent further clashes.
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police Firoz Kabir said a manhunt is underway to arrest those involved.
“Law enforcement is closely monitoring the situation, and the attackers will be brought to justice,” he said.
