Bhola-Monpura sea-truck service halted for 9 days

Monpura islanders on the edge of the Meghna River have been waiting nine days for the government-run vessel ST Ilisha to resume service to the mainland, halting daily life.

The ferry, out of operation due to mechanical failure, has left locals with no safe travel option. Md Kawsar Hossain, manager of BIWTC’s Bhola region, said the vessel would resume service once repairs are completed, advising passengers to contact higher authorities regarding complaints.

With the ferry inactive, residents are forced to use small one-deck launches and unauthorized trawlers, navigating the hazardous Meghna waters. The Monpura-Tazumuddin route is operated by Md Nuruddin Miah Yanur Enterprise, whose vessel has been docked since August 26, confirmed Md Nirab, the sea-truck’s helmsman.

Stranded passengers, including Shahid Talukder and Amena Begum, alleged that the contractor is ferrying people using unlicensed trawlers, putting lives at risk. Many called for multiple government-operated vessels on the route, noting pregnant women and patients cannot reach Bhola town for medical care.

Md Nirab said repair work is ongoing and service may resume within a day or two. Md Riyad Hossain, Port Officer of BIWTA Bhola region, said teams have been sent to stop illegal vessels. Khandaker Tanvir, Deputy General Manager of BIWTC (Barisal), added the contractor has been instructed to resume operations immediately, warning action will follow if service is not restored soon.
