BAU forms probe committee over student protest, confinement of teachers

A six-member committee has been formed to identify those involved in vandalism and other destructive activities, and to investigate the incident in which agitating students locked all auditorium gates of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) following an Academic Council meeting, confining participants for eight hours.

The order, issued Tuesday by Acting Registrar Dr Md Helal Uddin on behalf of BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, confirmed the development.

The probe body will be led by Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Islam Sardar, dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and president of the BAU Teachers’ Association, with Deputy Registrar of Establishment Branch-2 Dr Md Monjur Hossain as member secretary.

Other members include Prof Dr Mohammad Gulzarul Aziz of Food Engineering and Technology, Prof Dr Quazi Forhad Quadir of Agricultural Chemistry, Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman Khan of Agricultural Finance and Banking, and Additional Chief Engineer (Civil-1) Enamul Haque.

The committee has been asked to submit a investigation report along with recommendations.

According to the order, students of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science had earlier submitted a memorandum on August 7, demanding a combined degree to expand their job opportunities.

In response, the VC formed a committee on August 12 to resolve the issue. Based on that committee’s recommendations, an emergency Academic Council meeting was held on August 31 with 251 teachers present, where the proposal to introduce three separate degrees was unanimously approved.
