A case has been filed after Tk16 lakh was looted from a locker at the Eastern Rupsha branch of Krishi Bank in Khulna.
Three security guards have been taken into custody for initial questioning in connection with the incident. Police said the robbery likely took place between Thursday evening and 10:30pm on Friday.
Branch Manager Kamrul Islam said: “There was Tk1,616,000 in our vault, which has been looted.”
Rupsha police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman said: “The bank was closed on Thursday afternoon. There was no guard last night, and the criminals took advantage of this. Whoever is involved will not be spared.”
The guards in custody are Afzal, Abul Kashem, and Tarikul.
The OC added that a case had been lodged against unknown persons, with Branch Manager Kamrul Islam as the complainant. “No arrests have been made. CCTV footage shows a masked robber, but he could not be identified. The three guards are being questioned but are not accused in the case.
The Krishi Bank branch is situated by the Khulna-Mongla Highway, near Purba Rupsha petrol pump and the Purba Rupsha bus stand police outpost. Reports suggest the robbers covered CCTV cameras with clothes before breaking in. Locals said the bank had been closed since Thursday afternoon, the last working day of the week.
According to police, guard Abul Kashem discovered the break-in around 10pm on Friday. He found the main gate, inside gate, and locker smashed, with the premises in disarray. The cashier, in the presence of police, checked the ledger and cash, confirming Tk16 lakh missing.
Abul Kashem said he had not been on duty Friday as his wife was unwell but briefly visited the branch around 2pm and found everything in order. He suspects the robbery occurred later in the afternoon.
