Two children drown in Gazipur pond

Two children have died after drowning in a pond in Sreepur, Gazipur.

The incident occurred around 3pm on Saturday, in Satiabari village of Rajabari union, Sreepur upazila. After being informed, police recovered the bodies and handed them over to their families.

The deceased were identified as Raihan, 10, son of Shahjahan Sikder of Satiabari village, and Mahim, 9, son of Rajjab Ali from the same village, said Sreepur police station Sub-Inspector Surujjaman.

Monira Parvin, a female member of the Rajabari union parishad, said: “The boys were playing with a ball by the pond near their homes. Suddenly, their ball fell into the water.”

She added: “While trying to retrieve it, they slipped and went missing in the pond. After a long search around their home and nearby areas without success, relatives became concerned.”

She also said: “A local farmer, on his way to bring cattle to the field, noticed the children’s sandals by bank of the pond and became suspicious. Later he informed the relatives, the farmer helped recover the bodies of Raihan and Mahim from the pond.”

“The boys fell into the water while trying to retrieve their ball. As no complaints were made by the children’s guardians, the bodies were handed over to the families without autopsy following an application," the SI added.
